New analyses from the Emergency Care Research Institute (ECRI), an independent, non-profit organization which conducts medical device evaluations, show that more than 50% of disposable isolation gowns it tested failed to meet the standard levels of protection. This puts healthcare workers and patients at risk of exposure to bloodborne or other pathogens, including COVID-19.

ECRI issued a high-priority hazard alert warning of safety concerns with disposable gowns from suppliers outside America or from non-traditional suppliers.

Since the pandemic began, healthcare institutions have been struggling with shortages of personal protective equipment (PPE), including isolation gowns and N95 masks, and they have looked outside their standard supply-chains to fulfill their needs.
